Comic Con 2015: TMNT, Batman, Marvel and a whole lot more

San Diego Comic Con 2015 has come and gone and there (as always) was some pretty damn awesome stuff showcased, revealed, expanded on and freaked out over! There was a ton of things that got me excited, but I am going to try and narrow it down to the five announcements that really blew the industry’s socks off.

Batman vs Superman

I know I’m a minority in this but I want to admit right away that the Nolan Batman movies were not for me. I enjoyed them enough, but I don’t agree the trilogy is the be-all and end-all of Batman like so many other people did. I was really excited to see what would happen with Batman vs Superman. The Dark Knight Returns is one of my all-time favorite comic books and while I know the movie is not a retelling of that, seeing Batman in that Batsuit modeled off the one in the Dark Knight Returns was freaking great. I have always preferred a slightly older Batman, in his 30’s I think is the best age, and to be honest I have no idea what age exactly Ben Affleck is supposed to be in the movie, but I still think he is a good choice for the role. Seeing a glimpse of Wonder Woman was also really cool and while Gale Gadot is clearly drop dead gorgeous in that outfit I am still not 100 percent on the casting, but after seeing the trailer I am at least a little bit more sold on her.

Star Wars ss all about the fans

As a product of the 80’s I of course love Star Wars and while no new footage was revealed, JJ Abrams (and the rest of the crew of course) went above and beyond to make sure the fans in attendance felt like they were part of something special – and they were treated to a Star Wars concert. For me though, it was awesome seeing Han, Luke and Leia together on the same stage. While I am always a Luke Skywalker fanboy I must say it was really cool to see Harrison Ford in such good spirits and looking much younger than he has in years. In all this was 100 percent pure fan service and I am sure this is something the folks lucky enough to be there will never forget.

Ash vs Evil Dead

Let me tell you right away that the Evil Dead reboot we got a couple of years ago felt unnecessary and was not what many fans wanted. Ash vs The Evil Dead, on the other hand is just what we wanted ever since Army of Darkness. The season starts this October, will be ten episodes long and is going to have buckets of laughs, buckets of blood and buckets of Boom Stick shells hitting the floor. This to me has all the makings of an absolute classic TV series and is one of my most anticipated TV shows in years. Bruce Campbell is pretty much awesome in everything he is in but when he is Ash he takes awesomeness to a whole new level baby! The panel, which if you have not seen, I highly recommend you check out was one of the most fun and over the top panels I have ever seen. Please, for your own good, check out this trailer.

Fox’s Marvel Universe

‘Ugh…’ is what to comes to mind when I think of Fox’s Fantastic 4 reboot. But I have to say it was cool to see the cast from X-Men Apocalypse, Wolverine 3 and Deadpool share the stage. These three movies have a lot of potential, which I personally think are going to be amazing. As a kid I was blown away by the Apocalypse story line in the X-Men cartoon series and ever since, he has been a firm favorite of mine. Hugh Jackman as Wolverine is always a good time and honestly it will be sad to see him go with someone else taking on the role. Speaking of Wolverine it has not been said if or how much of a role he will play in the Apocalypse movie. Deadpool could be a huge hit, even bigger than people think. Deadpool is just such a great character who has worked amazingly well in comic book, TV and video game form and if there was one guy who could bring him to life on the big screen it is Ryan Reynolds.

Batman & Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles team up. What?

The IDW reboot of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is one of my favorite comic book series in the last decade. It is by far the best incarnation of the awesome foursome to ever be created and I will take anyone on in a katana duel who says otherwise. Part of the fun of this Ninja Turtles series has been the team ups. One saw the Ninja Turtles team up with the Lone Gunmen from the X-Files – say that out loud, Ninja Turtles, teaming up with the Lone Gunmen. And just a little while ago they were transported to a different version of New York to team up with The Ghostbusters. It’s awesome stuff. Well my number one highlight of this year’s Comic Con was the reveal that the Ninja Turtles will be transported to Gotham and to team up with Batman… the 9-year-old inside me is freaking out. Hell, the 33-year-old sitting I front of this computer screen is freaking out!
